Update: December 1

Hopefully, everyone received their green sheet about our Celebration Photos. We will use the photos in class this week and for several weeks after. Even if your student will be absent this week, please send in a photo by email. Already we are receiving photos showing an incredible diversity of amazing family traditions from attending pow wows, birthday candle races from the Czech Republic, and caroling traditions with friends and family.  Coming up: Your child will be sharing their picture with their peers in partners and groups and looking for common themes. The more your child has had opportunities to talk about their picture the more confident they will be sharing, so please spend some time talking with your child about the picture you are sending. Think about questions their peers might ask? Who are you celebrating with? When do you do this celebration? What is their favourite part? How do they participate in the preparation or events of your celebration?

Hello Families! We are excited to see you on Friday November 28 during Conferences.  Our learning from this week:     Math:   We have introduced patterning and worked on recognizing familiar dot patterns like found on dice. We also looked at dots and how they can be arranged or grouped and still make the same amount.      Literacy :   We introduced the letters Aa and Mm using our UFLI literacy program.  We were able to practice forming these sounds and printing the letters.     We continued to explore our outdoor environment this week using our five senses.  The children noticed things like crunchy snow, frosty breath, and cold air touching their skin.  They noticed that snow doesn't have much of a smell.  We also had lots of fun digging and playing with the snow.     Afterwards we worked on making different kind of lines (straight, horizontal, vertical, slanted, curvy) to make a winter picture with sno...

Hello!   Our learning from this week:   We had a fun-filled week of swimming! Ask your child about something they learned or something fun they did at the pool. The students added to their journals by drawing what they learned, practiced, or their favourite thing to do at the pool. Thank you to our parent and school volunteers for making this possible for our students! This week we read a book from the We Thinkers series called "The Group Plan". This book focuses on following a plan with the whole group and how everyone needs to do their part. These books talk about expected and unexpected behaviour and include social and emotional learning opportunities alongside the characters in the stories. We practice these skills in our everyday center play and learning times.     Class photos were sent home this week.    Scholastic order forms were also sent home this week in backpacks. You can order online and type in  My Class Code  RC315418.  ...

Our learning from this week:   We finished our work on sorting this week. We chose what rule we used to sort and glued items in our journals.    In our Literacy Program UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Institute), we finished our "Getting Ready Lessons".  This involved creating a sound wall for all our letter sounds including all the consonant sounds and all of the vowel sounds.  We thought about how our mouth parts (teeth, tongue, lips etc.) make each sound and grouped them by the way the sound is formed.  We also worked on forming all of the Upper Case Letters.  We focused on the types of lines- vertical, horizontal, slanted and curved. We worked on mini white boards and focused on making the letters from TOP to BOTTOM and from LEFT to RIGHT. Next, we will start connecting letter graphemes (written letter) to their sounds using lower case letters. We are on our way to becoming readers and writers!    We had a great time during ou...

Hello Kindergarten Families, Our learning from this week:                       We were scientists and observed our natural environment outside the school. We used our senses to explore various sounds, sights, touchpoints and smells of the outdoors. Then we drew in our journals about nature and used the colours we saw to guide our choices. We had an Assembly for Remembrance day.  We also remembered our Veterans and made Poppy Postcards to say thank you to them.            We sorted objects in math using different rules (size, shape, colour.) Ask your child about sorting and encourage them to use a rule to sort objects at home or outdoors.   Reminders:    Swimming forms due back ASAP.   Communication Folders (check them for forms, classwork, and messages).   Please email your teacher if you are able to volunteer for swimming (if you have clearance). It's a tight tur...
