Happy Friday! Our learning from this week:   Math:   We have been reviewing our 2D shapes and tying concepts together with science, as we explore how humans stay warm in the winter. We made a (paper) house out of varying shapes in our journals this week. This task also assists students in recognizing the shapes needed to draw a house. This was a fun activity to watch as students critically chose colours that would be visible as they made their houses.     Literacy :   We have learned letters Aa, Mm, Ss, Tt, Pp, Ff,  Ii  and  Nn . A handout for the letter  Nn  and sight words was sent home this week. Be sure to put them in your blue At-Home Folders. We have been encouraging students to recognize these words in environmental print (in words around them) and through text. Our class especially is looking for the word "the." Try pointing it out when you read with your child or during everyday activities.  Social/Science:   We...

Hello Kindergarten Families,    We spent much of our week working with students individually to complete mandated Alberta Provincial Assessments in literacy and mathematics. Your children have shown amazing stamina and resilience while completing these. They also showed great "flexible thinking", working with different guest teachers and moving in and out of activities during their testing times.    Our learning from this week:   Math:   We have continued to explore the concepts of size.  This week we compared: sorting a set of objects into group by size (big/medium/small), with ordering objects in a sequence from smallest to largest. The students then, independently cut out and ordered snowflakes to show their understanding. We will send these home next week. During centres we have also explored sequencing objects from shortest to tallest.      Literacy :   We have learned letters Aa, Mm, Ss, Tt, Pp, Ff and  Ii . A...

Hello Kindergarten families! Our students enjoyed participating during in-line skating this week. Many of us were sad that it ended. Thank you to our parent volunteers who helped by getting skates and gear on all of the kindergarten students. We wrote and drew in our journals about our skating experience. We learned how to add wheels to the bottom of our feet in our drawings.      Our learning from this week:   Math:   We are continuing to recognize our numbers 1-6. We played  many dice-rolling games this week. This is a great way to practice "subitizing" (seeing numbers at a glance.) We counted the number of wheels on our roller skates and added both feet together to find out how many wheels we had in total. Some students had 3 wheels per foot and others had 4!   Literacy :   We have learned letters Aa, Mm, Ss, Tt, Pp and Ff. A handout for the letter Ff and sight words were sent home this week. Be sure to put them in your blue At-Home Folders. Re...

Welcome back! We hope your winter break was refreshing and full of quality family time. The kindergarten students were happy to be back. This week we drew in our journals about our break and what we did during the time away from school. We also started on some winter art, with help from our grade ¾ buddies, by ripping masking tape and preparing to make a "Tree in Winter", inspired by the beautiful rime frost covered trees we had at the beginning of the week. It was wonderful watching the students help each other and build relationships across grade levels.    Our learning from this week:   Math:   We are continuing to practice using our numbers 1-5 and be able to recognize them "at a glance." We played a couple of math games this week, including "Garbage" and a dice rolling game. We have also begun explorations of size and shape.    Literacy :   We have learned letters Aa, Mm, Ss, Tt and Pp. A handout for the letter Pp and words will be sent home on Mo...
