Hello Kindergarten families,

Our learning:

We recognized a variety of celebrations this week such as Lunar New Year and the beginning of Ramadan. We also showed Canadian pride as we wore red to cheer on Team Canada. We talked about various Olympic sports and the countries participating in the games. It was Family Friday today. Students moved around the school to participate in different activities in another classroom. Ask your child what they did.

We have a puppet theatre in our dramatic play centre and students have been actively practicing their "professional" skills during play. Students are also aiming to create visual content that should be entertaining for an audience. I have been reminding them to tell a story with a beginning, middle and ending.

Math:

In Math, students worked subitizing (recognizing familiar number patterns) on dominos by playing "The Hockey Game".  In this game, students determined the greatest number and stacked their dominoes, so that the tallest stack was the winner. We had Olympic hockey playing in the background on our Smartboard.

Literacy:

We discussed story organization, including the relevant things that are introduced in the beginning: Who are the Characters?  Where does the story take place? And When does the story take place?  We paid close attention to how the animals moved and the descriptive verbs used. We practiced retelling The Mitten story by Jan Brett. Students also learned how to be an active listener.

We have learned letters Aa, Mm, Ss, Tt, Pp, Ff, IiNn and Oo. We are getting better at recognizing our "heart" words (irregular words) and have been practicing reading these words. So far we have learned: The, I, a, is, and & as.

Social/Science:

We have been learning about how animals survive in winter. This includes hibernation, migration and adaptation. The students learned a new word called "camouflage" where animals adapt to their surroundings to blend in. Try reminding your child at home of the concepts of hibernation, migration and adaptation, this helps solidify these concepts so they can recall it later when they need it.

Physical Education:

We spent much of this week discovering and learning about racket sports like badminton. We used two types of rackets to practice our skills by either hitting a beach ball or balancing a birdie on the racket. We learned a proper "handshake" grip on the racket and we tried to only use one hand to swing or bounce the ball or birdie in the air. We also continue to explore movement by being an animal or even an Olympian doing their winter sport. Bobsled was fun as students made rows and leaned from side to side.

Enjoy the weekend; GO CANADA!

Best,

Ms. Kinnear
