Weekly Message: March 13

 Hello Kindergarten Families,  

We had a super fun week using the big gymnastic equipment. Thanks for everyone sending their kids to school in "gymnastics friendly" clothing.  The children did a great job following safe routines and experimenting moving their bodies in different ways on the equipment. They LOVED it! We spent time reminding and refining our "motorcycle" grip while using equipment. Ask your child what they liked doing in gymnastics. Today we worked in our journals drawing about this experience. The children also wrote "I can" statements, now that we have learned the letter Cc in Ufli Literacy. Children wrote sentences such as:  

-I can hang on the bar. 

-I can run and jump on the mat. 

-I can climb on the ladder. 
 

They are really beginning to see themselves as writers!   

          
Next Week, we will continue with gymnastics so please have your child come to school dressed like you did this week.  We will be doing "Mission Impossible".  The equipment will be set up like an obstacle course (a slow and careful one), which they will move through.  It will be fun.  


We opened our "Pet Store" and students have been "purchasing" animals all week! We have a couple of live fish in a small tank that students have been observing. Students have been performing staff duties by helping customers find animals and pet food.  



We have been learning math, science and language through our exploration of ocean environments. We have been examining shallow waters (the Sunlit Zone), where we find ocean plants, coral reefs and a huge diversity of marine life.  We have also look at the creatures that spend time in the Pelagic Zone (deep water), such as humpback whales and Manta Rays). Today we explored the Midnight Zone and The Abyss, where few creatures have adapted to living in an environment with no sun, huge pressure and cold waters.  

 

 


 
We also learned a new math game with a lot of strategy.  In our shark game, the kids could break the number they rolled apart as they moved the sharks towards the food, to avoid their opponent getting the prey.  


Literacy: 

We spent time working on forming/printing the letter Uu. We have learned letters Aa, Mm, Ss, Tt, Pp, Ff, Ii, Nn, Oo, Dd, Cc and Uu. We introduced two new heart words this week: to, & do.

Hello Kindergarten Families, We welcomed students back this week. We spent time on routines and adjusting to a new classroom setting.  Our learning from this week: We explored and predicted whether a pumpkin would sink or float in water.    We passed two kinds of pumpkins around and discussed the concepts of larger and smaller, and heavy and light.  This week we read an Aaron Reynolds story, Creepy Pair of Underwear.    We made a craft of a Shape Monster. Ask your child what shape they chose to make!   Please practice cutting at home with your child. Ideas include: cutting up playdough, cutting up items in nature, cutting out of flyers and magazines to help make a grocery list.    Coming up:  Photo day is on Monday November 3rd. We will be sending swimming forms home next week. Weekly Message: November 7

  Hello Kindergarten Families, Our learning from this week:                       We were scientists and observed our natural environment outside the school. We used our senses to explore various sounds, sights, touchpoints and smells of the outdoors. Then we drew in our journals about nature and used the colours we saw to guide our choices. We had an Assembly for Remembrance day.  We also remembered our Veterans and made Poppy Postcards to say thank you to them.            We sorted objects in math using different rules (size, shape, colour.) Ask your child about sorting and encourage them to use a rule to sort objects at home or outdoors.   Reminders:    Swimming forms due back ASAP.   Communication Folders (check them for forms, classwork, and messages).   Please email your teacher if you are able to volunteer for swimming (if you have clearance). Weekly Message: November 14

  Our learning from this week:   We finished our work on sorting this week. We chose what rule we used to sort and glued items in our journals.    In our Literacy Program UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Institute), we finished our "Getting Ready Lessons".  This involved creating a sound wall for all our letter sounds including all the consonant sounds and all of the vowel sounds.  We thought about how our mouth parts (teeth, tongue, lips etc.) make each sound and grouped them by the way the sound is formed.  We also worked on forming all of the Upper Case Letters.  We focused on the types of lines- vertical, horizontal, slanted and curved. We worked on mini white boards and focused on making the letters from TOP to BOTTOM and from LEFT to RIGHT.
