Weekly Message: March 6

Hello Kindergarten families,

It was wonderful to see your families at conferences yesterday. Thank you for taking time out of your day to see the progress that your student is making in their learning. My highlight was watching the students explain and show their knowledge through engaging activities.

Our learning:

In our journals this week, we finished our "animals in winter" page. We also started the task of creating a pet store in our dramatic play area. We will be doing more of this through the next two weeks. Students will be making signs and labels for things that they are "selling" in the pet store. Feel free to encourage them to create material at home if you have time. Students drew a pet that they would like to have in their journals (sorry! ;)

Math:

In Math, we continued working on patterns and playing math games. We counted forward and backward lots this week. We even tried counting to 20 as a whole group and backward from 20. It was a lot harder to count backward. It is beneficial to always count backward if you count forward so children learn where numbers are in relation to each other.

Literacy:

We spent time working on forming/printing the letter Cc. We have learned letters Aa, Mm, Ss, Tt, Pp, Ff, IiNn, Oo, Dd and Cc.

Physical Education:

We started our gymnastics unit this week. Students were excited to see the gymnastic mats and we will be using more equipment next week. We practiced our different seated positions including: Pike, Straddle, and Tuck. Ask your child to show you any of these (they are pros at this!) We learned to tuck our chins in when we move, fall, and rock/roll. We placed our hands in a way that protects us from hurting our arms and wrists by keeping our fingers pointed toward our feet. We hopped and practiced our "safety landing." Ask your child to show you what this looks like.

Reminders:
 - Purdy's Chocolate orders due March 11.
 - Book Fair starts next week (students will browse on Monday and make a wish list for you to peruse at home.) We will visit again, as a class, later in the week (on Wednesday) to make purchases.
